Low tides this week

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Extremely low tides on the Oregon Coast will expose areas normally hidden by the surf this week. Wednesday morning, the tides will drop as low as minus three feet, about as low as they can get on the coast. Clamdiggers know that this is the best time to dig for clams. It’s also a good time to search for shipwrecks and tidepools.

The receding waters should allow a good view of the Peter Iredale at Clatsop Beach, a ship that sank in 1906. The tidepools around Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach will be easily accessible to view starfish, anemones and urchins.

The low tides will also expose the ghost forest of 2,000 year old tree stumps at Neskowin.
