Hood to Coast Relay

Friday, August 21, 2009

The Mother of all relays is coming to Seaside August 29th, Hood to Coast. It's one of the longest major relays in North America and the largest in the world in terms of participation. The course runs 197 miles, starting at Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood and ending on the beach in Seaside.

The finish line in Seaside is always entertaining. Between the crazy costumes and the wild van art, it's a great people watching spot. The beer garden on the beach is also popular.

The Salt Makers Return

Thursday, August 13, 2009

The Seaside Historical Museum is hosting the return of the Salt Makers in Seaside August 14 -16. During the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery’s stay in NW Oregon in the winter of 1805-06, some members were dispatched to what would eventually become Seaside. There they replenished the Corps’ store of salt by boiling seawater around the clock for 48 hours.

Signs declaring “You Are Now Entering 1806” are posted at the Avenue U beach access where first person character interpreters prepare you for a journey back to the 1806 salt camp. The men have studied their historic character and they perform the part in the jargon of 1806. The first person interpreters will be scooping ocean water out of the surf, bringing it to the Salt Camp and actually making sea salt.

Visitors can participate by representing the Clatsop Indians who came to the salt camp to trade wild berries, fruit, meat and other 1806 trade goods for beads and bright pieces of metal.

Nunsense in Lincoln City

Sunday, August 2, 2009

The popular musical, Nunsense is running at Theatre West in Lincoln City through September 5th. Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of “Grease.”

Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Featuring star turns, tap and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenomenon. With more than 5000 productions worldwide, it has been translated into 21 languages. For ticket information, go to http://www.theatrewest.com/.
