It’s Spring Whale Watch week on the Oregon Coast. The Gray Whales are heading north from Baja. About 6 whales per hour are expected to pass along the coast. Trained volunteers are posted at 26 sites along the coast through March 27th to help whale watchers spot the magnificent mammals. For a list of whale watch locations, visit www.whalespoken.org.
It’s time to clean up the Oregon beaches after the winter storms have wreaked their havoc. With the help of SOLV and countless volunteers, the annual SOLV Spring beach cleanup will take place on Saturday, March 20th from 10 am to 1 pm. SOLV will have 45 meeting sites along the Oregon coast, so pitch in and help clean up your favorite beach. For more information, go to www.solv.org.
Cannon Beach is hosting a fun event this weekend, Savor Cannon Beach. Wine tastings, wine dinners and a wine walk through art galleries and stores are just part of the activities scheduled for March 12-14. Participants in Saturday’s wine walk purchase a glass for $25 and can visit over 20 Cannon Beach businesses for wine tastings featuring Northwest wineries. The Winter Wine Tour is in its third year and all proceeds benefit the Cannon Beach Children’s Center.
The annual Nye Beach Murder Mystery Weekend is March 13 and 14th. Locals stage a murder and visitors can investigate “who dunnit.” Each year, around 100 people gather, collecting clues from various businesses and asking questions of actors/suspects dressed in period garb. This year’s mystery is “Barnie in the Rubble,” set in 1985. It centers around the murder of a Portland lawyer named Barnie, who was found in rubble at the bottom of a cliff.
Information packets are available for $5 between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday, March 13, Nye Cottage, 208 NW Coast Street, Nye Beach, Newport. You’ll have until 5 p.m. to collect clues and interrogate suspects. Solutions (the who, when, why and how) are due back at Nye Cottage by 6 p.m. The big reveal, when the real culprit is named, is set for Sunday, March 14. Prizes and gift certificates are given to the winning detectives.
Beer and the beach, what a great combination! On March 5th and 6th, The Seaside Chamber of Commerce is hosting Beach Bite & Brew, a beer and food tasting event at the Seaside Elks Lodge. Admission includes a souvenir glass.
